Wind damage is sneaky. Hail leaves visible marks. A fallen tree is obvious. But wind damage can be subtle enough that you do not notice it for weeks or even months, and by then it has already caused secondary problems.
Utah gets strong winds regularly. Those canyon winds that rip through the valleys, the microbursts during monsoon season, and the occasional winter storm with sustained gusts over 60 miles per hour. All of it takes a toll on your roof over time.
What wind actually does to shingles
Wind does not usually rip shingles off all at once, although that can happen in severe storms. What it does more commonly is lift the edges. Every asphalt shingle has an adhesive sealant strip that bonds it to the shingle below. Strong wind gusts can break that bond and lift the shingle edge. Once it lifts, it rarely lays back down and reseals on its own.
That lifted edge becomes an entry point for water. The next time it rains, water gets pushed underneath by the wind and works its way toward your decking. You might not see a leak for months, but the damage is happening.
What to look for from the ground
You do not need to climb up on your roof to check for wind damage. Here is what to look for from ground level.
Missing shingles. The most obvious sign. If you see bare spots on your roof or find shingle pieces in your yard after a storm, you have wind damage.
Shingles that look crooked or out of line. Healthy shingles lay flat in uniform rows. If you see shingles that look lifted, curled, or shifted out of alignment, wind has gotten underneath them.
Creased shingles. When wind lifts a shingle and bends it back, it creates a visible crease line even after the shingle settles back down. Look for horizontal lines across individual shingles that were not there before.
Debris in unusual places. If a storm deposited branches, leaves, or other debris on your roof, it may have also caused damage underneath. The debris itself can trap moisture and accelerate deterioration.
Damaged ridge caps. The shingles along the peak of your roof are especially vulnerable to wind because they are the most exposed. If ridge cap shingles are lifted, cracked, or missing, the rest of the roof may have damage too.
Where wind damage is worst
Wind damage is not uniform across a roof. The edges and corners take the most abuse, especially on the side facing the prevailing wind direction. Ridge lines and hip lines are also more exposed. If you are only going to check one area, check the windward edge and the ridge.
Along the Wasatch Front, prevailing winds generally come from the south and west, but canyon winds can hit from almost any direction depending on your specific location. Homes near canyon mouths, like those in Layton near the canyon, Kaysville, or North Ogden, tend to see more wind damage than homes further out on the valley floor.

A qualified roofer can tell the difference during a roof inspection. Wind damage tends to be inconsistent, affecting some shingles and not others, concentrated on exposed areas. Normal aging is more uniform across the whole roof.
