This is the first question most homeowners ask when something goes wrong, and it deserves a real answer rather than a sales pitch. The short version: it depends on the age of the roof, the extent of the damage, and how many problems you are dealing with.
When repair is the right call
If your roof is under 15 years old and you have an isolated problem, repair almost always makes sense. A cracked pipe boot, a handful of shingles lifted by wind, a small section of failed flashing. These are targeted fixes that a qualified roofer can handle in a few hours for a fraction of what a replacement costs.
Repair also makes sense when the damage is contained to one area and the rest of the roof is in good shape. If 95% of your roof has plenty of life left in it, tearing everything off because of one problem area does not make financial sense.
When repair is just a band-aid
If your roof is 18 to 20 years old and problems are popping up in multiple places, repairing one spot just means the next spot fails in a few months. You end up spending $400 here, $600 there, $500 somewhere else, and in two years you have spent $2,000 or more on a roof that still needs to be replaced.
When that pattern emerges, the honest thing is to say so. There is no interest in repair revenue at the expense of honest advice.
The other situation where repair does not make sense is widespread storm damage. If hail or wind affected a large portion of the roof, patching individual spots creates a patchwork of old and new material that will not age consistently. A full replacement through insurance is usually the better path.

The decision framework
Ask yourself these questions: How old is the roof? Is this the first problem or the third? Is the damage isolated or spread across the roof? How much have you spent on repairs in the last few years?
If the answers point toward an aging roof with multiple problems and mounting repair costs, replacement is the smarter investment. If the answers point toward a younger roof with one specific issue, repair is the way to go.
