If there is one topic every homeowner should understand better, it is attic ventilation. It is invisible, it is easy to ignore, and nobody thinks about it until something goes wrong. But poor ventilation causes more long-term roof damage than almost anything else, and it is one of the most fixable problems out there.

What ventilation actually does

Your attic needs to breathe. Ventilation creates a flow of air from the soffits at the eaves, up through the attic space, and out through vents at the ridge or near the top of the roof. This airflow does two distinct things depending on the season.

In summer, it removes trapped heat. Without ventilation, your attic can reach 150 degrees or more on a hot day. That heat radiates down into your living space, making your AC work harder. More importantly for your roof, it bakes the shingles from underneath. Shingles cooked from above by the sun and from below by a superheated attic age faster, lose granules faster, and fail sooner.

In winter, it removes warm, moist air that rises from your living space into the attic. If that warm air gets trapped, two things happen. First, the moisture condenses on the underside of the cold roof decking, causing mold, mildew, and wood rot over time. Second, the warm attic melts snow on the roof unevenly, which is exactly how ice dams form.

Signs your ventilation is inadequate

Ice dams in winter. If you consistently get ice buildup at the eaves, warm attic air is melting snow on the upper roof. That water runs down and refreezes at the colder eave edge. Better ventilation is usually part of the solution.

Excessive heat in summer. If your upstairs rooms are noticeably hotter than downstairs, even with AC running, poor attic ventilation may be contributing.

Moisture or mold in the attic. If you see frost on the underside of the decking in winter, or dark mold spots on the wood, moisture is getting trapped.

Premature shingle aging. If your shingles are curling, cracking, or losing granules faster than their age would suggest, excessive attic heat from poor ventilation may be the cause.

Peeling exterior paint. When moist attic air has nowhere to go, it can push through the eaves and cause paint on the exterior trim to blister and peel.

How ventilation works

Effective ventilation requires balanced intake and exhaust. Intake usually comes through soffit vents, the perforated panels or vents under the eave overhang. Exhaust goes out through ridge vents along the peak, or through box vents or turbine vents placed near the ridge.

The key word is balance. If you have plenty of exhaust venting at the ridge but the soffit intake is blocked, the system does not work. If you have great intake but no ridge vent, the hot air has nowhere to go. Both sides of the equation need to be functional.

One of the most common problems we see is insulation pushed up against the soffit area, blocking the intake vents. The insulation was installed correctly for thermal purposes, but nobody installed baffles to keep a clear air channel from the soffit to the attic space. This completely defeats the ventilation system.

When to address it

The best time to address ventilation is during a roof replacement, because everything is accessible. Adding ridge vent, installing proper baffles, and ensuring balanced airflow is straightforward when the roof is open. It is harder and more expensive to retrofit after the fact, but it can be done.
