What To Ask a Roofing Contractor Before Your Project

What To Ask a Roofing Contractor Before Your Project

Bob Harvey Roofing • October 11, 2022

When you need a roofing contractor, ask around at the hardware store, grocery store, and book club, in addition to reading online reviews. Word-of-mouth is still the best reference, and people easily share their experience with good and bad roofing contractors. Now that you have a few names, here are some questions to ask a roofer before hiring them.

Is the Company Licensed with the State?

The licensing requirements of roofing contractors differ between cities, counties, and states. Before appointing any contractor, ask for the name of the license holder and check with the relevant offices to ensure the contractor’s license is free of violations and up-to-date. Bob Harvey Roofing is licensed and a member of the Utah Roofing Contractors Association (URCA).

Are they using a building permit?

Every county and city has its building permit requirements, and a quality contractor will know what is needed for the work you want. Besides the building permit, inspections are often required and even the inspection schedule has certain requirements. The URCA offers a relatively comprehensive list of the permit, inspection, and inspection schedule requirements for cities and counties in Utah. However, always double-check with the relevant government departments.

What Would The Project Cost?

One of the primary roofing questions every homeowner asks is what would the project cost? Owning a home is a long-term investment, and installing new roofing is a big expense. But it can increase the value of your home and offer curb appeal in the event you want to sell after the new roof is installed. Bob Harvey Roofing offers prompt free estimates and will also do a free 16 point roofing inspection if you are unsure what kind of work needs to be done.

Is the company insured for general liability and workers comp?

For your own protection, only appoint insured roofers that are also bonded. A contractor license bond is a Utah state requirement for all contractor license applicants, and since Bob Harvey Roofing is licensed, we are bonded. But what does it mean to be insured and bonded?

  • A bond protects the customer if there are problems with the project or contracting company.
  • You need to know if the subcontractors have the required licenses and insurance.

Bob Harvey Roofing has a professionally trained, highly experienced team of roofers who are experts at commercial and residential jobs.

Is the company using their own employees or do they contract out the labor?

Why should it matter to you if the contractor uses roofing subcontractors for hire? Two reasons:

  • You might, potentially, be liable for the subcontractor’s payment if the main contractor does not pay them.
  • You need to know if the subcontractors have the required licenses and insurance.

How Does The Installation Process Work?

It is important when hiring a roofer to find out how the installation process works, or your project becomes just one of many and falls behind. When you understand the process, you will be less stressed and have sufficient time to make arrangements if you need to be away from home for that period. At Bob Harvey Roofing, we have the following installation process:

  • Inspect and measure the project
  • Present options to the owner
  • Hold a pre-job meeting
  • Work done under supervision
  • A member of top-level management does the final quality inspection
  • Do a walkthrough with the owner.

Do They Offer A Warranty?

There are two types of warranties relevant to a new home roof installation. The roofing company should provide a warranty that covers their work. The second warranty covers the materials and is provided by the manufacturer, whether for metal roofing, shingles or TPO. Bob Harvey Roofing is certified to install products manufactured by CertainTeed, Duro-Last, and Johns Manville.

Do They Have Testimonials or Reviews?

As mentioned before, the best way to find out about the quality of a roofing contractor’s work, is to ask around or search online for testimonials and reviews. You can also ask the contractor for a list of previous clients serving as references. Prepare a short list of questions you want to ask before contacting them.
