The Benefits of Waterproof Outdoor Flooring

Bob Harvey Roofing • Jan 10, 2023

The type of outdoor flooring you have may not be at the top of your priority list, but if you want to get the most out of your outdoor area in terms of longevity and functionality, it should be one of your main considerations.

Your outdoor flooring needs to look appealing, but it also needs to be able to withstand the constant use, high and low temperatures, and weather conditions. This is why waterproof vinyl flooring is one of the most popular options for patios, terraces, and decks. So, why is it better to choose waterproof materials for your outdoor decking? We will discuss four helpful benefits of waterproof vinyl flooring in this blog.

Moisture Build-Up Is Prevented

Your deck is in direct contact with the elements all day, every day. Rain, snow, wind, hail, and even direct sunlight can be damaging to your deck in the long run. If you live in an area that is subject to frequent rainfall, this prolonged exposure to the rain will eventually lead to moisture build-up.

This moisture build-up can damage the structural integrity of our deck, wear down the underlying surface, or even get into the building envelope. The flooring may swell or warp and even become discolored as the water damage increases. When they dry, it will cause the flooring to contract, leaving it disfigured.

Sometimes, laminate floor products are marketed as waterproof when they aren’t – they just have a waterproof top layer. So, if water gets under the top layer, it can still cause damage. Not dealing with this moisture build-up can also create a breeding ground for mold and mildew, which is not only damaging to the floor but can also be detrimental to your health.

As mold and mildew spores are picked up by the air, inhaling them can lead to coughing, headaches, fatigue, nausea, breathing difficulties, and a host of other health problems.

Waterproof vinyl flooring is resistant to moisture and, therefore, prevents moisture buildup and the problems that come with it. Most waterproof vinyl flooring is engineered with a solid waterproof core. It can be either a WPC (wood-plastic composite) or an SPC (stone-plastic composite). Both WPC and SPC belong to the subcategory of LVT (luxury vinyl tiles), and because of its cost-effectiveness and durability, LVT is a popular choice for commercial flooring.

Waterproof Outdoor Flooring Is Easier to Clean

This entails proper maintenance and regular cleaning. However, outdoor areas can be a hassle to clean.

Waterproof vinyl flooring is easy to clean and preserve because it won’t soak in any spills. Any substances that fall onto the floor will stay on its surface instead of getting soaked in, so all you need to do is wipe them away. This also helps repel stains, which is why vinyl flooring is also popular for areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

If you want a more intensive clean, you simply need to use a PH-balanced vinyl floor cleaner and run a wet mop or damp cloth over the floor. Plus, because vinyl flooring is waterproof, you don’t need to worry about water damage.

It Protects Your Deck For Much Longer

Your deck is an investment, and as such, you want it to last as long as possible. Waterproof floors, in general, but vinyl flooring, in particular, are extremely durable and will be able to withstand a lot more wear and tear than traditional flooring options. They aren’t prone to aging like hardwood floors, won’t need to be replaced nearly as often, and they are easy to maintain, giving you an investment that will stand the test of time.
