According to the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), thermoplastic polyolefin membrane (TPO) is a blend of polypropylene, a type of plastic, and ethylene-propylene polymers. Colorant, flame retardants, ultraviolet radiation absorbers and other substances unique to each manufacturer’s brand are added to these two polymers.   

TPO is one of a group of products within the single-ply roofing system. It is used on low-sloped and flat roofs generally chosen for commercial properties such as malls, industrial buildings and schools. This roofing system is also used for homes and looks modern.

Disadvantages 

TPO roofing disadvantages include inconsistent manufacturing quality, inability to handle extreme heat and lack of color options compared to other roofing materials. 

• Manufacturing quality

If the TPO roofing membrane manufactured is not of high and consistent quality, the product lifespan is shorter. To avoid this disadvantage, clients can check if the brand suggested for their property has an Energy Star rating and was evaluated by the CRRC.

• Inability to handle extreme heat

TPO roofing does not stand up to extreme heat, and though manufacturers are improving on this, it is not the best product to use in areas with consistently high temperatures. 

• Limited color choices

TPO roofing is generally white, but gray and black colors are available. It does not have the color range provided by other roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles or metal roofing.
